Polymer chemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies large molecules, or polymers. Polymers are long, large molecules formed by the joining of repetitive units called monomers.After World War II, many researches and studies on polymers began. Because these materials often showed unique and interesting properties that could both be a substitute for metals in many applications and to define new applications for them.

Millions of polymers are produced annually around the world, and in many high-tech industries, such materials have found very important applications. Given the growing importance and diverse uses of polymers, it may not be far-fetched to have a string that studies only these materials.In 1946, Hermann Mark founded the Polymer Research Institute, the first research institute to study polymers. Polymers were worked on at some American universities before that date, but the first institute to specialize in the study of polymer chemistry was the Mark Institute.The University of Akron is a university that has been working in the field of polymers and rubber industry for nearly 100 years. The University of Akron in Ohio, USA, can be considered the polymer pole of America or even the world. Akron University is not a well-known university but has a lot to say about the rubber industry as well as polymers worldwide.

In Iran, however, in 2004, the University of Tehran decided to establish this trend for a master's degree in chemistry. Prior to this date, many universities and professors worked on polymers in the country's universities, but it was the University of Tehran that established this trend for the first time.After this university, some other universities such as the University of Isfahan, Gorgan and…, as well as the Polymer and Petrochemical Research Institute of Iran also established this trend in their universities. In 2006, the University of Tehran took its first doctoral student in this field to be the main founder of this field in the country.
