The most historic city in central Iran is called Isfahan. This city is considered as the third largest and most populous city in Iran and is one of the largest centers for the production of various handicrafts in Iran.

As you know, from ancient times, this province has been called the cradle of fine arts and beautiful handicrafts. And  there is evidence of that.

Common handicrafts that flourished during the reign of the Safavid kings include weaving, sequins, wiring, weaving, glabton embroidery, chain weaving, textiles, carpet weaving, and so on.

It is interesting to know that the handicraft market of Isfahan declined during the Qajar period, but re-developed after the Constitutional Revolution.

Isfahan handicrafts in general, including carpets, engraving utensils, tiles and sewing on fabric, are influenced by the decorative designs of the Safavid era, and due to the skill and understanding of Isfahani designers and by using a lot of creativity, all handicrafts from old works. They are adapted.

One of the branches of traditional tiling and architecture is called Chinese knot, which is arranged in different moods and words according to the design and using bricks, tiles or other decorative geometric patterns.

Of course, this art is not limited to architecture and is one of the sub-branches of the wood industry. The beautiful and original art of Chinese knot is very expensive due to the great difficulty and effort it requires.

Another handicraft of Isfahan is Khatam Kari. This art dates back to the Safavid era, at that time palaces, tables and chairs, the departure of the Qur'an were inlaid. At first, the center of inlay making was the city of Isfahan. But later this art flourished more in Shiraz and today the inlay of Shiraz has a higher status.

The art of decorating the surface of objects with small triangles in different designs is called inlaying. These triangles are made of ivory, bone, brass wire, wood and sometimes gold.

Isfahan Khatam is made by Shiraz Khatam method, sometimes accompanied by silver or enamel work, which can not be seen in Shiraz.

The beautiful works of inlay making that attract attention in Isfahan markets are decorative objects, beautiful boxes, photo frames, chess, backgammon and so on. Enameling is the art of decorating metals with opaque or transparent colored materials with the help of fire. This art involves complex chemical interactions and is considered a laboratory art, and in fact includes objects that are decorated by combining metal oxides with some salts due to heat. Enameling can also be done on pottery and glass. In the handicraft shops of Isfahan and even other cities, blue colored utensils and objects can be seen, which is one of the most popular handicrafts in Isfahan.

The art of plastering is one of the arts related to architecture that has had its own form and style in each region and each time period. As the name implies, the main materials used in this art are plaster. In Iran, bedding has been associated with differences in different historical periods. Gypsum is widely used in decorative arts due to its ductility, adhesion, desirable color, easy application, abundance and cheapness.

A penner is a box made of wood, cardboard or trigger paper that is used to hold calligraphy pens and writing tools. The pen is decorated with various designs of plant motifs and geometry and shapes of people, birds or animals and is considered as one of the most important handicrafts in Iran. In Isfahan, making penner or penner making is one of the most prosperous arts and crafts that attracts many.

Mosaic is the art of creating a pattern on wood, which is done by teleporting and combining colored wood and other materials such as fiber, inlay, metal and shell on wood or polyester paint. The history of mosaic art dates back to the sixth century AH and the Seljuk period. This art was initially used to decorate the surface of tables, sideboards and doors, and only Islamic patterns with 5 colors of ebony wood, betel, pear, elm and mulberry were used. Today, this art is still of interest to many enthusiasts, and craftsmen are also engaged in the production of its products.

Copper is one of the ancient handicrafts of Iran. Handmade copper objects and utensils have been on display in museums since time immemorial. The history of coppersmithing in Iran dates back to at least five thousand years ago and it is suspected that the first metal discovered by humans was the same copper metal and the first metalworkers were Iranians. Among the major centers of this art are the cities of Kashan, Isfahan, Kerman, Zanjan and Shiraz.

The word inlay means a special carving with pores on wood, which has a long history.

At present, the art of woodcarving is still popular and many artists are engaged in it all over Iran, but unfortunately, the use of original designs, which include Islamic and Calligraphy designs or flowers and plants, is gradually being forgotten and replaced by foreign designs.

In one of these arts, instead of carving the background of the wood and highlighting the desired role, different woods with different natural colors are cut side by side. This work is very similar to the art of mosaic. In this new species, boxwoods are used for yellow color and jujube for red color. The field of work is more than walnut wood or the roots of forest trees, which themselves have beautiful designs. The most important material on which wood is inlaid is wood.

This wood should be strong and without knots. For this purpose, they use ebony, betel, beech, boxwood, and jujube and walnut woods. Of course, Ebony and Baqam are more durable because they are both stronger and fatter, but in Iran, due to the abundance of walnut wood, this wood is mostly used. Wood carving in the cities of Golpayegan and Isfahan is flourishing and noteworthy.

Pottery and ceramics is another handicraft of Isfahan that is popular in Natanz and Shahreza. Shahreza is one of the major pottery centers in Iran and its products have many buyers.
